Suspiciously high Hluttaw maintenance expenses spark probe; report out soon

An investigation is being carried out of suspiciously high spending on polishing work in the parliament building, and a report will be released this month, said investigators.

The investigation is looking at a K47 million (US$34,776) bill for the polishing of teak doors and frames conducted by the Hluttaw maintenance team, which was deemed excessive. However, the leaders of the investigation have not said how mich it should actually cost to polish the bulding.

The investigation team includes senior officials and is chaired by Pyithu Hluttaw MP Daw Yin Min Hlaing of Kant Kaw constituency and vice-chaired by Amyotha Hluttaw MP U Phyay Yal of Kayah constituency No. 1.

“We’re investigating it because it costs too much. The report is not finished and we’re not allowed to share the preliminary findings,” said U Phyay Yal.

The work is carried out by the Hluttaw and presidential palace maintenance team under the Ministry of Construction. The ministry relies on its own budget for maintaining the Hluttaw, said U Ko Ko Naing, director of the Pyithu Hluttaw office.

“The Ministry of Construction makes an estimate and relies on its budget for all maintenance carried out in the Hluttaw,” he said.

The House Administration Joint Committee approved the conduct of the investigation. The committee was chaired by U Aye Thar Aung, deputy speaker of the Amyotha Hluttaw, and vice-chaired by U Tun Tun Hein, deputy speaker of the Pyithu Hluttaw, and included two MPs from the two Hluttaws.

Fighting corruption is one of the top priorities of the new government of President U Win Myint.
