Woodside will continue its activities in Block A-6

Woodside, the Australia-listed oil and gas driller, was reported to have cancelled a tender for seismic work at Blocks A-6 and AD-7 after the results were insufficient in determining the commercial viability of the projects. This came after recent drilling results from several wells revealed less gas resources than initially anticipated, Reuters reported yesterday.
MPRL E&P has a 20pc stake in block A-6, while French national oil company Total owns the remaining 40pc.
“We are sure that Woodside will not withdraw from A-6, which has good prospects. We will go forward. The details of the future plan are still being discussed and not confirmed for now,” said U Tint Swe, Public Affair Executive Director of MPRL E&P.
However, the spokesperson did not comment on activities at Block AD-7, where Woodside is partnering with Posco Daewoo Corp. The South Korean company has said there is no change to plans for AD-7.
During the five year exploration period given to MPRL E&P by Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise, the first well at Block A-6, Pyi Thar, was drilled by the consortium in March 2012. The second well, Shwe Yee Htun, was drilled in 2015 and both were successful, MPRL E&P said.
The Pyi Thit and Pyi Thar Yar wells at Block A-6 were drilled in July and August this year and those wells were successful, too. Now, all four wells are being evaluated for commercial viability, U Tint Swe said.
“Drilling at all four wells in A-6 were successful and gas was found. For the two wells drilled in 2017, we are still interpreting the findings. It has only been one month and we have not obtained exact information on the volume of gas reserves yet. Based on the findings, a drilling plan will be formulated and officially announced in due course,” an executive director of MPRL E&P said.
Findings from the drilling of the test wells cannot be defined by the company and must be proved by a third party, officials said during a press conference by the Ministry of Electricity and Energy in August.
For now, there is no plan to conduct seismic acquisitions in Block A-6, the company said.
Seismic acquisition is the generation and recording of seismic data, which can reveal the volume of gas reserves within the area.
